A Systems Theory Perspective

Abstract

From the perspective of a family systems therapist, human-animal companion relationships offer unique insights into the emotional processes of the family. Often perceived as "a member of the family ", the role of pets in the family, and how these relationships may be revealed in family photographs, is the subject of this paper. The clinical implications of these complex, metaphorical relationships provide therapists with another lens to explore and understand the human family emotional process.
