Abstract
The process of psychotherapy with patients with chronic medical problems presents unique challenges to the mental health practitioner. This paper discusses many of the problems likely to be encountered with such patients and presents a detailed case history of one patient as well as a discussion of dynamics likely lo exist in these patients. Various treatment implications are presented as well as suggestions for techniques with chronically ill patients. It is also the case that various issues arise in practice when the therapist becomes chronically ill. Case material and practice implications when this arises are addressed.
