Abstract
Private practitioners stand in the unique position of being personally visible in the community, rather than being seen collectively as part of an institution. This individual focus has both benefits and hazards associated with it, which are enumerated and discussed. The benefits include increased psychological mindedness, personal emotional growth, improved interpersonal relationships, intellectual stimulation, recognition, financial security, and independence. Hazards and liabilities to be addressed include tempering the psychological mindedness, maintaining the personal growth, avoiding burnout, and living comfortably with success.
