Abstract
After making the general point that our views and attitudes toward the poor are a function of the personal and social environments within which we function, the author provides a brief personal context for understanding his own views, and then presents vignettes of five former patients that he has treated. Following the case vignettes, some simple lessons important to the author's development as a therapist are drawn in the hope that they may stimulate similar reflections in others.
