The Betrayal of the Child

The Contributions of Alice Miller

Pages 27-40 | Published online: 26 Oct 2008

Abstract

The significance placed on the role of early childhood experience on later development and on the etiology of psychopathology is generally accepted. The trusting relationship of the dependent child to caregivers is frequently violated in many ways and may be viewed as constituting a betrayal of the child. This article presents the contributions of Alice Miller, a psychoanalyst by training, who has, through her published work, brought international attention to the abuse of children.
