Abstract

The development and meaning of the experience of flow is explored from the perspective of an Olympic athlete. Beginning in childhood and continuing through adolescence, the interaction of instinctual knowing and skill led to flow and culminated in optimal performance-winning a gold medal. Personal narrative within a framework of qualitative research and the professional literature yields an integrated picture of the many facets of flow.
