Abstract
Work with competitive athletes is rewarding and challenging. Understanding the unique aspects of the elite sport environment can enhance psychological consultation. This paper begins with several case examples, then background characteristics common to many athletes are described, e.g., early involvement in sport participation, reliance on sport specific behavioral norms. It is suggested that paying particular attention to athletes' sport history, time demands, and sport characteristics will increase satisfaction with sport psychology services. The important role that coaches and the media play in athletes' lives is also described. Discussion of these points is essential because psychologists who gain familiarity with elite sport environments will better serve their competitive athlete Clients in need of psychological services.
