Abstract
This paper draws upon empirical research literature and faith-related provider perspectives on addiction and recovery to address practice and research challenges posed by 12-step and other spiritually oriented treatment approaches. The paper is organized to provide clarification of relevant terminology, review research literature and controversies surrounding the effectiveness of 12-step recovery approaches and other treatment models, present faith-related provider narratives, and discuss the implications of existing research and faith-related treatment ideologies for evidence-based practice.
