Abstract

Dye identification can provide information on where and how historic and archaeological textiles were made. This information, together with data from trade archives and design and textile knowledge may determine its provenance, authenticity, as well as original faded colour. For the last seven years the research program on natural dye-stuffs has been carried out in the Institute of Natural Fibres in Poznan. The research has been based on historical sources and laboratory trials. Approximately 50 dyestuffs of plant origin were tested in this period for possible application in natural raw materials. The aim of this paper is to present natural plants used in textiles applications in different cultures and results of research on dyeing at Studio Natural Art in the Institute of Natural Fibres. In cooperation with Ethnographical Museum, Division of National Museum in Poznan, the Institute made two exhibitions that demonstrated both the results of dyeing experiments and tapestries from different circles of culture.
