Designing Wood Fibre Morphology and Mechanical Properties of Fibreboards

Pages 169-187 | Published online: 08 Oct 2008

SUMMARY

Lignocellulosic fibres are high quality raw materials that have been used to produce a variety of technical fibre composites. The fibres assessed in this study were Picea abies and Fagus sylvatica high temperature thermomechanical pulps. In the case of effectively bonded composites their mechanical performance is mainly determined by the aspect ratio of the fibre bundles. In this contribution we show that it is possible to identify the most suitable descriptors of fibre dimensions by using chemometric tools, in order to relate raw fibre properties to material properties of the final technical composites.
