Dehumanization as an Enactment of Serial Killers

A Sadomasochistic Case Study

Pages 23-49 | Received 29 Apr 1996, Accepted 13 Apr 1995, Published online: 20 Nov 2008

Abstract

The author explores the concept of a tableau, a term used to describe the evolving crime scene that is sometimes discovered in the investigation of serial killers. This tableau is considered as a complex architectonic symbol of the killer'S traumatized past. Elements found in the tableau are described. The author illustrates the discussion with a case example of a sadomasochistic young man whose fantasies follow the dictates of a dehumanizing principle.
