Unplanned Termination

Pain and Consequences

Pages 35-46 | Published online: 20 Nov 2008

Abstract

Despite the best intentions, termination does not always work out as planned. Forced leave-taking” precipitated by illness or death of a therapist, creates painful consequences and complicates the already difficult process of saying goodbye. Although this problem may not be common to most social work practice, it is one that nevertheless deserves attention since it raises important questions for both patient and therapist about the final phase of treatment.
