Abstract
The concept of developmental lines, first formulated by Anna Freud, has been useful in the complex, clinical assessment of individuals as they develop in the affective, cognitive, object relations, and behavioral domains. Using traditional psychoanalytic object relations, and ego psychological points of view, this paper explores the utility of developmental lines as they inform the diagnosis and treatment of marital pairs. Two case vignettes describe how couples vary in their capacities to fall and remain in love.
