Abstract

The Tritium Extraction Plant being built at Chalk River Nuclear Laboratories (CRNL) will be the first industrial scale demonstration of the Liquid Phase Catalytic Exchange (LPCE) process for transfer of tritium from heavy water to deuterium. The plant will also demonstrate new technology in the areas of electrolytic cells for D2 generation, water cooled recombiners, metal hydride packaging and magnetically coupled blowers for tritium service. It will be used to detritiate the heavy water in Atomic Energy of Canada Limited’s (AECL) reactors.
