Abstract

The management of radioactive waste is a very important part of the nuclear industry. The future of the nuclear power industry depends to a large extent on the successful solution of the perceived or real problems associated with the disposal of both low-level waste (LL W) and high-level waste (HL W). All the activities surrounding the management of radioactive waste are reviewed. The federal government and the individual states are working toward the implementation of the Nuclear Waste Policy Act and the Low-Level Waste Policy Act. The two congressional acts are reviewed and progress made as of early 1990 is presented. Spentfuel storage and transportation are discussed in detail as are the concepts of repositories for HL W. The status of state compacts for LL W is also discussed. Finally, activities related to the decommissioning of nuclear facilities are also described.
