The Myers Oration 2005: Untimely Death, Law and Suicidality

Pages 265-278 | Published online: 04 Mar 2011

The incidence of premature death amongst persons with psychiatric disorders is substantial and often not adequately appreciated. In particular, the percentage of persons with schizophrenia spectrum disorders and with bipolar disorders who commit suicide is very high, possibly up to 13%. The oration reviews recent international analyses of such data and notes limitations in official records. It then examines legal responses to the phenomenon and, by reference to data on Australia's National Coroners Information System, identifies recommendations made by coroners about such deaths between 2000 and 2005. The author argues that available clinical and coronial perspectives need to be better shared in order for decision-making by psychiatrists, clinical staff generally, mental health review tribunals and coroners to be better informed. He also contends that the role of the coroner needs to be reconceptualised so that responses to inquest recommendations about matters such as deaths of psychiatric patients, especially those who are involuntary, are made mandatory.
