ABSTRACT

In the text artists Anna Piva and Edward George discuss ideas, processes and practices that informed the making of Astro Black Morphologies/Astro Dub Morphologies, a multimedia installation and sound performance created using transformed X-ray data from the black hole Cygnus X-1. In 2002 in a talk titled ‘The Music of Black Holes’, astrophysicist Phil Uttley at Southampton University announced that Cygnus X-1's X-ray emissions were implicitly musical in structure. Piva and George, working with astronomer Tim O'Brien from Jodrell Bank Observatory and generative designer Adrian Ward, transformed the data from this mysterious deep space phenomenon into an immersive dub space experience.
