Presenting the evidence: The REF output statement and portfolio

Pages 279-289 | Published online: 03 Jan 2014

ABSTRACT

In the run-up to the census date for the Research Excellence Framework 2014 (REF 2014), the focus of creative practitioners and practice researchers in media disciplines is moving from the creation to the presentation of work. A key element in establishing the research dimensions of practice is a 300-word statement and, if necessary, a portfolio as a means of providing evidence of research where this may not be apparent in the output alone. With close reference to the HEFCE guidelines, this article suggests ways in which a statement may be effectively formulated to support the presentation of research-through-practice outputs and, particularly, provide evidence of research dimensions to media practice presented as research (practice as research) in the REF context.
