The New Face of Censorship: State Control of the Visual Arts in Shanghai, 2008–2011.

ABSTRACT

This essay examines the factors that influence censorship of the visual arts within the PRC including the backgrounds of institutions/curators/artists, locations of exhibitions, dates of exhibitions in the ‘communist calendar’, media attention and political or sexual content of artworks. The article draws mainly on events in Shanghai during 2008–2011. It seeks to explain in detail the workings of the surveillance apparatus surrounding the showing of contemporary art in Shanghai and explores several strategies that have been employed to deal with censorship issues by curators and artists.

本文检视了中华人民共和国内可能影响视觉艺术审查的几项因素,其中包含 艺术机构/策展人/艺术家的背景、展览地点、在“党的日历”中的展览日期、 媒体关注和艺术品中的政治/性等相关议题。本文将把焦点放在2008至2011 年间于上海发生的几个事件,以详尽解释监控体制是如何在上海的当代艺术 展览中运作,并探究策展人和艺术家们是如何用不同的策略来因应该审查制 度。
