On-Site/In-Sight

Abstract

The article introduces the guest-edited issue of JVAP and contextualizes the proceedings of the Third Scottish Theoros Conference held at the University of Dundee in 2001. It provides the rationale of ‘On-Site/In-Sight’ as an engagement with key issues concerning the dynamic relationships between the academic disciplines, which deal with and interact in the making of art, the critical reflection, the analysis of historical circumstances and the theoretical speculation on artistic and aesthetic processes and their outcomes. A focus is directed towards the exploration of the horizons of sightedness and vision particularly with regard to the viewpoints from which critical and conceptual questions regarding the interrelation between the sensuous and intelligible dimensions of the aesthetic process, object and experience are being considered. In light of the radical transformation of contemporary culture through the rapid development of information and communication technologies the article particularly expands the discussion about the relationship between sense perception, aesthetic experience and understanding.
