1. This is the third of several articles to appear on the topic of phantasy, following on from the articles on counter‐transference, in the Journal's Education Section (edited by Robert Michels with the assistance of Cláudio Eizirik, Alain Gibeault and Richard Rusbridger). Each set of articles is designed to set out the main issues embraced by a basic concept and at the same time to illustrate how the concept is viewed and understood from the perspective of each of several different psychoanalytic cultures (Michels, 1997, 78: 1067‐9).
