Abstract
The first part of this paper defines fungi and reviews the changing patterns of fungal infections. An overview of fungal induced genitourinary disease and concise analysis of present 20th century fungal treatment modalities is presented. This includes amphotericin and liposomal agents, the azoles and immune modulators. The second portion of the paper reviews 47 drug patents (1998 – 2001) and describes known biological activity and chemistry. A commentary summarises the patent data of the azoles, immune modulators and novel drug therapy. All of these patents present therapies that may have a role in the future treatment of fungal infections of the genitourinary system.
