Abstract

West Nile virus (WNV) is a mosquito-borne flavivirus that is now posing a severe threat to public health in North America. Prevention and treatment of WNV and other emerging flaviviruses represent a global public health priority. This article will review (i) general features of WNV transmission and replication, (ii) strategies recently reported in the literature and patents for vaccine development against WNV infections and (iii) inhibitors reported to have anti-WNV activities. A number of approaches for antiviral drug discovery as well as strategies for improvement of the diagnosis of WNV infections are also suggested.
