Abstract
Marine flora and fauna continue to provide a prolific source of novel lead compounds for the pharmaceutical industry. This review provides an analysis of the patents reported between May 1999 and July 2003, which identify new natural products from marine organisms, as well as new therapeutic uses for known metabolites. Over 50% of the patents described sponge-derived compounds and alkaloids were the most frequently patented class of natural products. Although patents covered a range of biomedical applications, 50% of the patents were for compounds with anticancer activity.
