Summary
Novelty: A bovine thymopoietin or thymopoietin-like cDNA clone is disclosed. Thymopoietin and thymopentin have an important influence on the immune system; in particular, they appear to have beneficial clinical effects in various conditions. For therapeutic use it is necessary to provide means by which thymopoietin may be obtained economically.
Biology: The cDNA clones contain a sequence corresponding to at least part of bovine thymopoietin mRNA since it contains at least the sequential nucleotides corresponding to amino acids 18 to 49. A full length DNA clone coding for thymopoietin(s) was necessary in order to study the structure of the mRNA and to examine whether active precursors and/or other thymic-stimulating factors were on the same mRNA.
Chemistry: Oligonucleotide sequences coding for different parts of the thymopoietin peptides were synthesized to be used as hybridization probes in searching for the gene coding for the corresponding protein.
