Patent Evaluation: Liposome Containing Oil-in-Water Emulsions as Vaccine Adjuvants

Pages 657-658 | Published online: 02 Mar 2011

Summary

Novelty: A vaccine composition consisting of an antigenic substance in association with a liposome and an emulsion is disclosed. The two components of the adjuvant (ie. the liposome/antigen component and the emulsion component) act together to produce high levels of immune response.

Biology: Immunogenicity of liposome/emulsion combinations with gD2 in goats was assessed. Results show that the combined emulsion-liposome immunization gave high antibody responses. Effects of gD2 association with liposomes on the immunogenicity of liposome/emulsion combination in goats was also determined. An increase in antibody titres is correlated with increased antigen association with liposomes. When repeated using gB2 again, the immunogenicity increased with increases in antigen association with liposomes.
