Summary
Novelty: The novel compound thiangazole, its pharmaceutically acceptable addition salts and closely related compounds are disclosed. Thiangazole is useful both as a pharmaceutical and as a pesticide. A method for its preparation is also disclosed.
Biology: Anthelmintic activity is demonstrated in trials with sheep infested with nematodes (e.g. Haemonchus contortus) cestodes, (e.g. Moniezia benedeni) and also Fasciola hepatica. Ovicidal/larvicidal action is demonstrated against Heliothis virescens (on cotton), Aphis craccivora (on peas), Heliothis virescens caterpillars (on soybeans) and others. Thiangazole is used as the active compound.
Chemistry: Thiangazole is obtainable by culturing the mycobacterium Polyangium DSM6267. Cis-trans isomers can be obtained by treatment with UV light and separation by chromatography.
