Patent Evaluation: Novel LDL-receptor gene inducers

Pages 165-166 | Published online: 03 Mar 2008

Abstract

Novelty: Novel compounds are disclosed which are inducers of the LDL-receptor gene and which may have utility as cholesterol-lowering agents.

Biology: The increase in the number of LDL receptors induced by compounds of the invention was measured by the LDL binding and degradation assays, modifications of the methods of Goldstein JL et al. (Methods Enzymol. (1983) 98:241).

Chemistry: The compounds were prepared using an aerobic fermentation procedure employing a novel culture identified as Aspergillus versicolor (fungi, class Hyphomycetes). Nine preparative examples for the specified compound and its salts are given.
