Xanthofulvin as an inhibitor of chitin synthase and its potential as an antifungal

Patent Summary

A novel antifungal agent, Xanthofulvin, is claimed. It is obtained from cultures of Eupenicillium sp.

Inhibitory activity against Cus 1 and Cus 2 (from Saccharomyces cerevisiae) was determined using [14C]-UDP-N-acetylglucosamine. IC50 values were 7200 and 2.2 μM, respectively.

Fermentation methods of Eupenicillium sp. NR7125 and subsequent isolation of Xanthofulvin are described. Physicochemical properties are also given.
