Abstract
In this patent, workers from Ciba-Geigy disclose the construction of a series of genetically modified yeast strains which can be used for two related purposes. Firstly, they can be used to detect and quantify proteins which fail to fold correctly, and secondly, they can be used to identify compounds or treatments that may influence the misfolding of proteins. The invention may aid the development of treatments for conditions which are thought to be primarily caused by incorrect protein folding. These include Alzheimer's disease (AD), Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD), and possibly certain forms of cancer.
