Abstract
Burn injury can lead to severe trauma, organ dysfunction and ultimately death. This is due in part to the release of inflammatory mediators and the translocation of bacteria from the gut into the circulation. Recombinant bactericidal/permeability-increasing protein (rBPI) binds bacterial lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and kills Gram-negative bacteria. In a rat model of burn injury, rBPI was able to reduce the inflammatory cell infiltrate into a number of tissues and decrease the incidence of bacterial translocation.
