Company Profile National Institutes of Health: Analysis of patenting 1992 - 1995

Pages 117-128 | Published online: 29 Feb 2008

Abstract

The National Institutes of Health (NIH), is the collective name given to more than twenty specialised healthcare research institutions in the US, whose development and licensing activities are centralised in an Office of Technology Transfer (OTT). Since it operates as a Government agency, the organisation differs in its patenting profile from the major pharmaceutical companies included in this series. However, this profile has been included due to the high ranking R&D position currently held by the organisation. This article includes information on the most important collaborative projects between the NIH and various universities and pharmaceutical companies, as well as highlighting the major areas of research and the most prolific inventors in terms of patent applications.
