Abstract
The patent and primary scientific literature pertaining to research on quinoline antimalarial agents is reviewed from 1990 to date. This encompasses the 4- and 8-aminoquinolines, the quinoline methanols and various miscellaneous compounds. A brief historical perspective is given of the major quinoline drugs, and current knowledge of their mode of action and mechanisms of resistance is summarised. Potential candidates for replacing and/or supplementing chloroquine and primaquine are detailed.
