Erratum
In the Drug Evaluation entitled “The treatment of urinary tract infections and use of ciprofloxacin extended release” by Hickerson & Carson, published in the May 2006 issue of Expert Opinion on Investigational Drugs (Expert Opin. Investig. Drugs (2006) 15(5):519-532), it has been brought to our attention that the penultimate sentence (left column) on page 520 should have read as follows:
The results showed that even though the drug cost for ciprofloxacin ER was higher than trimethoprim–sulfamethoxazole (TMP–SMX), the total cost of treatment was lower in those treated with ciprofloxacin ER even at modest rates of resistance [15].
The first sentence of Section 2.1 should have read as follows:
In 1999, the Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA) published guidelines for the treatment of acute uncomplicated lower UTIs in women as well as acute pyelonephritis [16].
The second sentence of Section 2.2 should have read as follows:
These recommendations are similar to those published by the IDSA [17].
The last sentence of Section 4.3, paragraph 1 should have read as follows:
The most commonly reported side effects include nausea, vomiting, dizziness and fungal infection. In a recent randomised, double-blinded trial of ciprofloxacin ER and IR involving > 500 out-patients, an extended-release formulation of ciprofloxacin had a statistically decreased rate of nausea and diarrhoea, and trended towards decreased overall side effects [61].
The first sentence of paragraph 5 in Section 4.10.1 should have read as follows:
The most recent study [61] evaluating an extended-release formulation of ciprofloxacin (that is different to the previously described Cipro ER in which ciprofloxacin is released at a steady rate over 6 h) is a randomised, double-blinded comparison of an extended-release formulation of ciprofloxacin and IR ciprofloxacin in the treatment of uncomplicated UTIs.
The last full sentence on page 527 should have read as follows:

The penultimate sentence of Section 4.10.1 should have read as follows:
Both treatments appeared to be very well tolerated; however, the ciprofloxacin ER group had significantly decreased episodes of nausea or diarrhoea (Figure 5).
