Abstract
Single agent cytokines have demonstrated efficacy in human clinical trials. Some of these agents have been approved for the treatment of cancer and/or infectious diseases. The systemic effects of cytokines are complex and interwoven. Combination therapies will offer opportunities to manipulate the immune system selectively, as research successes provide mechanistic support. Novel delivery systems and toxicity lowering agents are likely further to advance this field. The impact of the application of the human genomics and bioinformatics data currently being generated should be evident over the next decade as they are applied clinically, and can be expected significantly to advance treatment of these serious diseases.
