Abstract
Neutropenia, anaemia and thrombocytopenia remain problems for many patients with cancer, infections (including HIV) and renal failure. The discovery and continued development of haematopoietic growth factors that promote red blood cell and white blood cell proliferation and function have had a major impact on patient quality of life. Recently, factors responsible for megakaryocyte development and platelet production, the thrombopoietins, have entered clinical trials.
