Novel and selective immunomodulatory drugs

Pages 299-308 | Published online: 24 Feb 2005

Abstract

From examples of the steroid drugs through to the immunosuppressants cyclosporin A and tacrolimus, there are many examples of immunomodulatory drugs currently available which are used to treat a range of immune related disorders. Most, however, suffer to some extent from undesired side effects and these can limit their clinical effectiveness. The pharmaceutical industry is addressing this issue both through the generation of drugs with better selectivity profiles and through more focused target selection, driven by advances in the understanding of basic cell biological and physiological processes. This article is intended to summarise the different therapeutic areas in which novel immunomodulatory drugs might impact, and will address key targets and compounds under investigation.
