A Jungian Alice in Social Media Land

Some Reflections on Solastalgia, Kinship Libido, and Tribes Formed on Facebook

Pages 110-127 | Published online: 01 Feb 2013

Abstract

The phenomenon of Facebook may be seen as evidence of a thrust by the collective unconscious to inseminate creatively the spirit of our time with the ageless truth that we live or die via interconnection. Scientists are exploring the neurological and social shifts growing out of frequent Internet use, but it is worth questioning whether machines can ever be facilitative of soul. While Facebook members may manifest shadow elements such as the avoidance of embodied relationship, dishonesty, bullying, addictiveness, and mass-mindedness, tribes of reflective adults formed on Facebook are also developing a spirit of conscious global community, oriented toward creative social, political, and ecological change.
