A Rapid Technique for Otolith Removal from Salmonids and Catostomids

Abstract

A technique for otolith removal is described that requires less than 1 min and seldom requires a search. The otoliths are removed through the mouth and take no more time than that needed to take scale samples or fin rays. The method has been used successfully with Salmo, Salvelinus, Oncorhynchus, and Catostomus species.
