Topical retinoids in acne therapy

Pages 161-164 | Published online: 10 Jan 2014

Abstract

The author discusses the use of topical retinoids, including tretinoin, isotretinoin, adapalene and tazarotene. Besides historical and pharmacologic aspects, the efficacy, advantages and disadvantages of the various topical retinoids, their application, and how to advise patients suffering from acne vulgaris to obtain the best results, are discussed. Tolerance to isotretinoin, adapalene and tazarotene is better than to tretinoin and, although tazarotene is as effective as adapalene, the latter is better tolerated.
