Nondaily, nonoral and noncoital reversible contraception: increasing options for women

Abstract

In the past decade, the number of nondaily, nonoral contraceptive options has increased dramatically. Healthcare practitioners must not only be educated about these methods but must properly educate women regarding the full breadth of available birth control options. Effective counseling can provide important clues as to whether a particular method will be used properly by an individual patient. As such, obtaining such information must be combined with an overall nondirective approach. In order for contraceptive counseling to be effective, professionals should provide accurate and unbiased information to those women considering contraception. This review will help provide healthcare practitioners with the information needed to help women make informed and appropriate decisions when considering nonoral and reversible forms of birth control.
