Abstract

Evaluation of: De Rango P, Parlani G, Caso V et al. A comparative analysis of the outcomes of carotid stenting and carotid endarterectomy in women. J. Vasc. Surg. 51(2), 337–344 (2009).

Stroke is a leading cause of death in women. Landmark studies comparing carotid endarterectomy with medical management in both asymptomatic and symptomatic patients have shown results in women that are inferior to those of men. Over the past decade, carotid stenting has been used with increasing enthusiasm as a less invasive method for treating patients with significant carotid artery stenosis. The paper under evaluation offers results from a similar sized cohort of women who were treated with carotid stenting or carotid endarterectomy. Results of this nonrandomized retrospective study demonstrate that selected women can undergo carotid stenting with statistically similar results to the gold standard treatment, carotid endarterectomy.
