2 The Friendly Arctic is the title of one of Vilhjálmur Stefánsson’s books, as well as the title of a recent exhibition on his life and works which opened in Iceland in the year 2000 and has subsequently traveled to such venues as New York and Copenhagen (see http://www.svs.is/english/travellingexhibition.htm). The Stefánsson Arctic Institute (Stofnun Vilhjálmur Stefánssonar) in Akureyri, Iceland, founded in 1998, is named for him (see http://www.svs.is/english/index.htm).
