Illegal Renting of Agrarian Reform Plots: A Costa Rican Case Study

Abstract

This article examines the phenomenon of illegal renting of plots of land by peasant reform beneficiaries. It is based on research carried out at an agrarian reform project in Costa Rica, and offers some observations about the ways in which the type of agricultural development characteristic of northwestern Costa Rica encourages the renting subterfuge.
