Abstract
Using Scanning Electron microscopy, a study has been made of attachment of the eggs and of the young embryos to a substratum. The mesochiton of the oogonia persists for a long time. It performs an adhesive role, anchoring the pairs of zygotes to the substratum until attaching rhizoids develop. The persistent mesochiton may also help to conserve moisture, both to effect fertilization and to prevent excessive drying out of the young embryos.
