A comparative study of the fatty acid composition of Prochloron lipids

Abstract

The major lipids of cells of the symbiotic procaryote Prochloron, isolated from five different hosts, are monogalactosyldiacylglycerol, digalactosyldiacylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol and sulphoquinovosyldiacylglycerol. The major fatty acids of these lipids are saturated or mono-unsaturated acids containing 14 or 16 carbon atoms. Marked variations occur in the fatty acid composition of the galactolipids isolated from Prochloron cells from the same host at different locations or at different times. These variations appear to preclude the use of fatty acids as a taxonomic criterion for differentiating species of Prochloran.
