Abstract
The status and disposition of the genus Perispermon (Corallinaceae, Rhodophyta) are considered on the basis of a study of the designated lectotype collection of P. hermaphroditum Heydrich, the only included species. Results from a detailed morphological and anatomical investigation have led to the conclusion that Perispermon is a heterotypic synonym of Lithophyllum. The transfer of Perispermon hermaphroditum to Lithophyllum is effected [i.e. Lithophyllum hermaphroditum (Heydrich) comb. nov.], but its status as a distinct species within that genus remains equivocal. Relevant historical and nomenclatural information are also included, together with brief comments on the use of gametangial and carposporophyte features in the generic classification of those Corallinaceae that lack genicula.
