Do Cancer Treatment Guidelines Take the Elderly into Consideration?

Pages 261-265 | Published online: 02 Jun 2008

Abstract

Cancer treatment guidelines are systematically developed statements designed to assist practitioner and patient decisions about appropriate healthcare for specific clinical circumstances. They are developed according to a specific method and are based on randomized studies or consensus. Elderly patients without serious comorbidity or geriatric syndromes may be treated according to the present available guidelines, but these guidelines do not apply for vulnerable and frail patients.
