Pages 4-28 | Published online: 16 May 2013

Abstract

This article examines the outcomes of the transition to a market economy in downtown Moscow from the perspective of people living through this transformation. Moscow is ahead of the rest of the country if judged by the degree of privatization and the growth of the new private sector; however, the effects of urban restructuring on an urban society are contradictory and not as expected. We seek to understand how these changes in urban space reverberate in the everyday lives of Moscow households. [Key words: transition, urban restructuring, gender, everyday life, Moscow.]
