What Theorists Do

Pages 474-487 | Published online: 16 May 2013

Abstract

This essay explores the different ways of doing theory. Using highly structured, strongly causal, and proposition-based "grand theory" as a reference point, I describe and provide examples of three alternative approaches: critical theory, heuristic theory, and inter-textual theory. My intent is to encourage urban theorists to pay as much attention to how they theorize as they do to the meaning of "the urban."
